LEARNING HOW TO DEAL WITH BOX JUNCTIONS!
Box junctions are designed to keep traffic flowing. Understanding how to use them properly is important for safe driving and for your driving test.
If you block a box junction when your exit is not clear, you can:
– Fail your driving test
– Be fined in real life (many have cameras)
– Hold up traffic and frustrate other road users
This tutorial explains:
– When you are allowed to stop in a box
– How to turn right at a box junction
– The key rules you must follow

The Purpose of Yellow Box Junctions
The yellow criss-cross box is there to keep junctions clear and traffic moving. They are usually found in busy areas where queues often build up.
Turning Right at a Box Junction
Box junctions are often in place at busy crossroads where traffic flow is crucial. The yellow criss-cross marking shows the area of the junction you must keep clear.
On your driving test, approach the box using the MSPSL routine (Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed, Look) as you would when turning right at any junction.
Box Junction Rules
A common question is: “Can you stop in a box junction?”
The answer is:
– You can stop in the box if you are turning right and are waiting for oncoming traffic to pass, and your exit road is clear.
– You must not enter the box if your exit road is not clear.
If you enter a box when your exit is blocked, you can:
– Fail the driving test
– Get a fine in real life
– Block the whole junction

Correct procedure for turning right at a box junction
How to Use a Box Junction
The red car in the diagram is turning right at a crossroads.
– The red car is stopped inside the yellow box.
– It is waiting for oncoming traffic (the yellow car) to pass.
– The exit road it wants to turn into is clear.
This is allowed.
When the oncoming traffic has:
– Passed through the junction, or
– Stopped because the lights have turned red
…the red car can complete the turn and clear the junction without blocking anyone.
The key point:
– Always make sure your exit is clear before entering the yellow box area.
– You must clear the box even if your lights have turned red while you were waiting to turn.
We’ll coach you through real box junction situations before your test.

How Not to Use a Box Junction
In this second diagram, the red car has entered the yellow box to turn right, but its exit is not clear.
If the exit does not clear in time, the red car will be stuck in the yellow box when the lights change, blocking the junction and delaying other traffic.
This rule also applies to going straight ahead:
– You must not enter the yellow box if you cannot clear it due to traffic in front.
Stopping Rules at Box Junctions
At some box junctions there are:
– Cycle waiting areas
– Two stop lines (one for cycles, one for general traffic)
Ideally, you should stop behind the first line (for cycles) if the traffic ahead is not moving, even if your traffic light is green.
If you have already passed the first line and entered the cycle area, you must then:
– Stop at the second line,
– And not enter the box junction itself unless your exit is clear.
Stopping in the yellow box with no clear exit is very likely to fail a driving test.
Box Junction Laws and Fines
You are allowed to:
– Enter a box junction,
– Stop and wait for oncoming traffic to pass,
as long as your exit is clear.
It is against the law to:
– Enter the box when your exit is not clear,
– And then block the junction for other road users.
Many busy city box junctions have cameras. If you are caught using the box incorrectly, you can receive:
– A fixed penalty fine (often around £100, area dependent)
– A reduced fine if paid quickly in some council areas
